L’Américaine Serena Williams, qui visait un 24e titre record en Grand Chelem à Melbourne, a été éliminée au 3e tour de l’Open d’Australie (AO 2020) vendredi par la Chinoise Qiang Wang (29e).
Titrée sept fois sur la Rod Laver Arena (2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2015 et 2017), Serena a commis trop de fautes et s’est inclinée en trois sets 6-4, 6-7 (2/7), 7-5.
Elle n’avait pas été éliminée si tôt à Melbourne depuis 2006 (sachant qu’elle n’avait pas participé au Grand Chelem australien en 2011 et 2018).
